Book Review: WePowder Guide

  • by

If you are interested in skiing off-piste in the Alps, WePowder Guide: The Alps is a must have. The authors, Morris and Arjen, spent over 2 years writing the book and it shows. Written in perfect English, the book details the Alps’ best freeride terrain at over 100 different ski resorts.

Äfter driving thousands of kilomteres to — and through — the Alps for many, many seasons, wePowder was founded in 2008. We have learned to unlock the mysteries of intricate weather patterns, found out about interesting local phenomena and discovered tiny gems that have remained hidden to the tourist eye. We decided to share this knowledge and have written the most comprehensive freeriding guide ever published.

The book shows each general freeride zone, but not descriptions of actual ski descents. So you get pointed in the right direction, but still need to figure it out (or hire a guide). Each ski area is broke down by slope angle, aspect, geographical location, mountain type, tree line, type of trees, weather direction to receive most snowfall, and best period, as well as some insider pro tips here and there. There is even a QR code to each place’s weather forecast.

For you weather geeks, there is a super interesting section that discusses the various Alps’ unique microclimates and patterns such as stau, fohn, the Genoa and Adria Lows, and much more. There is even an informative chapter on avalanches and mountain safety.

Clocking in at 408 pages with lots of great photography, the price tag is very reasonable at €45 plus shipping. They also have a website with excellent forecasting and do regular weather discussion updates during ski season.
