Ski Season Opener

This weekend I took a jaunt over the border and through the woods to Switzerland to kick off my 39th season as a ski bum. The beginning of each season always brings me much joy. I often reflect back on my life’s trajectory and how grateful I am I chose the path I did. And a big shout out to my parents for encouraging me to pursue my dreams.

The conditions consisted of well-manicured groomers with an impressive 1,180 meters (almost 3,900 feet) of lift-served vertical. As is typical of early season conditions (it is mid-November), as the afternoon progresses, the pistes became a little scraped off and slickish in spots. But overall the skiing was worthy and it felt great to be back in my happy place.

Early morning hero carpet

Besides getting the old ski muscles revving again, being in the presence of big mountains is something I truly cherish. This part of the Alps has the highest concentration (18) of 4,000-meter peaks in the entire range. As a bonus, this ski resort (Hint: Wham filmed a video here back in the day) allows you to ski alongside some serious glacial radness.

No shortage of ice in these parts

Whenever I travel to ski, I make a pointed effort to get outside for sunrise and sunset. On my second morning I was greeted with some nice pink and purple hues over the Mischabel Range. There is something extra special about seeing the country’s highest peak standing proud above a charming and authentic mountain village.

Guten Morgen Schweiz!

All in all, it was great to be back in the saddle again. Vielen dank!
